Audi has foraged in the company parts bin to enable of host of upgrades to its current fifth-generation A4 sedan.
Ingolstadt’s designers have updated the A4’s appearance by shaping a larger grille, wider front bumper air intakes, new bonnet creases and broader headlights, with a greater number of LEDs. Around the back, new taillights have been borrowed from the larger A6.
The exterior styling changes might be subtle, but it is inside where Audi’s designers have applied the most significant A4 improvements. The traditional rotary dial infotainment interface system has been replaced by a freestanding 10.1-inch touchscreen, which is promised to be impeccably responsive to voice commands.
AI and impressive new diesel engine option
Audi’s new A4 also features car-to-X capability, where data harvested from other vehicles in traffic can enable an A4 to coast through junctions, by using a predictive algorithm to set the correct speed to time consecutive traffic lights when they go green.
Powering the updated A4 will a range of familiar Audi turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, with mild 12v hybridization added to lower average fuel consumption across the new range by some 0.3l/100km per model. Some of the more notable powertrain options include a 2.0 TFSI, rated at 180kW and an extremely potent new S4 performance diesel, producing 255kW and 700Nm from a 3-litre V6 turbodiesel.
Those Audi brand fans who have always been drawn to the more practical A4 Avant station wagon configuration will be glad to note that the Allroad variant now gains 35mm of additional ride height, perfect for taming those gravel roads. All new A4 Avants also have more than adequate luggage capacity, with 1495-litres of capacity with the rear seats folded down.
Audi has scheduled the improved A4 for release later this year, with select righthand drive market due to receive their first allocations of the new car in early 2020.
